I prefer fatigue and jello legs over altitude sickness, I still feel lucky I didn't get sick (other than the sporadic and dreaded Khumbu cough). April bought me chocolate bars this day to remind me that in all of life's misery, there is joy to be found in a milk-chocolate covered bread with caramel oozing into my mouth. This was also the beginning of Diwali and that evening we had some neighbors visit with blasting Nepalese classic hits. We ended that night with a dance party that's only vivid in our memories.   It was a good day and I miss the enthusiasm the families had that evening.   Namche Bazaar, Nepal. October 2014

Basu having carrier signal in the mountains. Meanwhile I barely get signal living near the Everglades. This is acclimatization day from Namche to Khumjung (a small sherpa village)...an "easy" day compared to my miserable trek to Namche the day before.   Basu is now trekking around the Annapurna range. Safe travels, di! Nepal, October 2014

This is probably the closest I'll ever get to the highest mountain peak in the world (center) on foot without losing my limbs. I saw her for a few seconds before the clouds rolled in. Three seasons of "Everest: Beyond the Limit" and several documentaries on Netflix lead me here. Until then, I've only seen her on TV. It was unreal. Sagamartha, Nepal. October 2014

Approaching Everest base camp, near and yet still so far from this vantage point. My hypoxic state of mind was "I'm totally fine here and can happily turn around"...but we pushed on slowly even though I only had the mental and physical capacity to breathe. Summit expeditions do not start until around March so there were no tents around the area. Beyond is the Khumbu glacier (innocent and calm looking, but terrifying) that leads up to Camp 1 above. Tenzing-Hillary Airport (LUA). Considered to be the most dangerous airport with a slope runway that only stretch to 1500 ft. It was cloudy in Kathmandu that morning so we waited here, along with other trekkers from different parts of the world, for a few hours. Any propeller sound made us all jump out of our seat and peak out the window, only to find a chopper flying by or landing. We wanted our plane to get us...we were ready to get back to western life...western toilets...western anything, and more importantly after being a vegetarian for 2 weeks, I wanted that chicken/falafel wrap that April and I discovered in Thamel.   Ironically, I miss this place.
